The larger a lion's mane, the more terrifying the animal appears to intruders threatening its territory. Lions are also the only animals that hunt together. Usually that is the job of the females. Because they are not as fast as leopards, they use their strength as a pack. They stalk their prey from different directions and circle them to take advantage of the surprise effect. This allows them to prey on large ungulates such as zebras and wildebeest, buffalo and even weakened elephants.
